9 Ways to Get the Most From Your Makeup

Follow these money-saving (and product-saving) tips!

Tip No. 1: The Sooner the Expiration Date, the Less You Should Pay

"Save on things that don't last too long, especially makeup with three-month expiration dates," says Miranda Mendoza, creator of the Slashed Beauty blog. She suggests switching up your mascara and eyeliner every few months.

Tip No. 2: Spend More $$$ on Your Face

"Splurge on great face makeup (like foundations and concealers) and skin care, because the rest of your makeup is only as good as your base layer," Mendoza says.

Tip No. 3: Sample, Sample, Sample

Don't just try a couple products at one store—try several at a few stores. Mendoza suggests bopping around at department stores and requesting samples to test at home.

Tip No. 4: Admit You Need Help

Asking for in-store help makes everything more efficient! "Tell staff what you're looking for generally, instead of a specific product, so you don't miss out on better recommendations," Mendoza says.

Tip No. 5: Consume Reviews Like They're Viral News

Scour YouTube, Snapchat, Instagram, and your favorite beauty sites to find customers with a similar skin type and tone to yours. This will help streamline shopping for trustworthy products.

Tip No. 6: Find a Dupe

"See if there are more affordable products that will do the same job for less," Mendoza says. Blogs are a great source for dupes, or alternatives, to that pricey lipstick you've been eyeing.

Tip No. 7: Keep Products Clean for Longer

"For any type of jar packaging, I suggest using a spoon to scoop product instead of your fingers to keep it sanitary," Mendoza says.

Tip No. 8: Know the Return Policy...and Use It!

"A lot of stores state the return policy on the receipt, so go home and try a product, and if it doesn't work, there's no shame in returning or exchanging it," Mendoza says. This even applies to drugstores!

Tip No. 9: Pay It Forward

Or, instead of returning the goods, give them to a friend or family member for them to try! You never know, you might turn someone on to a new eye shadow or their perfect lipstick.
