Keratin treatments have been lauded as the go-to step for attaining silky smooth strands. But, the salon version has its drawbacks, too: some treatments use formaldehyde (a chemical you don't want near or on your body) and formaldehyde-free options can run upwards of $300. Thankfully, some at-home products can work their non-toxic magic just the same.

So, how exactly do they work? Frizzy hair is the result of overly porous strands. "Adding keratin to hair makes it less porous," says Abraham Sprinkle, a member of the Keratin Complex International Creative Team. "Think of it as similar to the way you would spackle nail holes in sheetrock: the surface is left smooth."

Salon treatments can keep hair porosity at low levels for longer than a month, but at-home treatments, shampoos, and conditioners can do the same on a short-term basis.
