I'm sitting at my desk, working on a story. I've got my headphones on, and I'm listening to my very special work mix (Nightmares On Wax and Boards of Canada always seem to put my mind at ease). Just one thing (apart from the 300 words that were due an hour ago) is missing: coffee. I reach for my cup and take a sip. It's the ideal temperature: hot enough to wake me up, but not so hot that I'll scald my mouth—and this is important, because when I want coffee, I tend to underestimate the importance of things like physical pain.
But it's 2 p.m., and I distinctly remember making this coffee at 8:30 this morning. (Half-awake, in a bathrobe, my cat rubbing up against my ankles.) And yet, here I am at work in the afternoon. Which means it went from my stove to my french press to my container—then into my bag, onto the elevator, down to the street, into the murky depths of New York City's subway system, then back up into another elevator and onto my desk at work. And here it is, still steaming.
The thing about this mug (let's all remember that Thermos, like Jet Ski, Bubble Wrap, and Jacuzzi is a brand name, not an actual thing) is that it lets me bring a taste of home to work. I've got my favorite neighborhood roaster, I've got my favorite coffee they make, and now I've got my favorite way to drink it on the go. Beyond its sleek design and NASA-esque climate control capabilities, the thing—Zojirushi calls it a mug, specifically the SM-SA48-BA Stainless Steel Mug—doesn't spill. Because it has a lock. Yes, my coffee has a lock on it. Each day as I commute to work, I do so knowing that I've got this sleek little vessel tucked away in my bag, keeping my coffee warm till the time comes for me to drink it.
Because it stays warm well into the afternoon, I'm never throwing out cold coffee and paying for refills. With all the money it saves me this month, I'll be able to afford...another one. I've got the black one, but it comes in three other colors (Clear Red, Pearl Pink, Cinnamon Gold)—and when you find something you love, it's always good to have a backup.
