The Year 2017 Will Be All About: Faster, better binging
Why I'm Calling It Now: New Yorker television critic Emily Nussbaum recently described the 10-episode-long TBS show Search Party as "exactly the right length.... At times, Search Party reminded me of Fleabag and Catastrophe, two recent series that were only six episodes long but entirely satisfying." Although this trend of shorter episodes and seasons started well before 2017—with the likes of Stranger Things, The OA, and Transparent—we'll probably see more shows following suit. No longer does binge-watching have to be a drawn-out task, because you can kill eight hours between breakfast and dinner on an eight-episode season and still be able to go out that night. This may prove, once again, that our attention spans are shrinking, but in this case, we're kind of into it.

The Year 2017 Will Be All About: Widespread civic participation
Why I'm Calling It Now: Politically speaking, 2016 didn't go exactly as planned. It was, however, the giant kick in the butt we needed. Although November's 57.9% voter turnout seems lamentable, it's still a significant increase from the 2012 election, and the voters that did show up are to thank for the record-breaking four women of color who were elected to Congress. And the aftermath of this election is proving that the fight for political justice will just get stronger: a 40-fold increase in donations to Planned Parenthood will help secure reproductive health and freedom, and $7.2 million donated to the American Civil Liberties Union will be spent defending the civil rights of our marginalized communities. Sure, 2016 was the year we let ourselves down, but 2017 is going to be the year we rebuild, and demand that every single voice be heard.
