The App: Swarm, free.
What It Does: Remember Foursquare? Swarm is its improved offshoot that allows you to check into coffee shops, landmarks, parks—anywhere, basically—and compete with your friends while doing so. Whoever has the most check-ins by the end of the week wins bragging rights.
Why I Can't Live Without It: Once I got into the habit of remembering to check into bars and restaurants, Swarm became my savior, helping me remember the names of diners I came upon unexpectedly and hole-in-the-wall eateries I discovered by chance. It also gives my best friend a reason to text me, "Lol, where are you?" when she sees we're both checked in at the gym.

The App: Pacer, free.
What It Does: This very simple tracker displays a meter of how many steps you've taken
Why I Can't Live Without It: One of my (many) resolutions is to take at least 10,000 steps a day. Pacer helps me check in every few hours to see if I'm on track or if I need to go for a walk around the block. The other night I was getting into bed and realized I had only clocked 3,000 steps ("sedentary!"), so I laced up my sneakers and went for a run instead. How's that for dedication?
