Step Away From the Tape

It's time to upgrade your space, starting with your walls. These five companies make framing your prized photos, art and posters easy.

If you've recently purchased a new piece of art for your apartment or dorm room—congratulations, you've taken a step towards building a collection. In case you were wondering what to do next, here's a hint: don't treat it like a band poster; you'll need to frame the thing, too. And if you don't know the first thing about framing, that's OK: the companies below do, and they can make you the perfect frame at surprisingly affordable rates—some will even measure, mat, and mail it back to you. Either way, you'll be proudly hanging your new art on the wall in no time—no tape necessary.

Framebridge

The good folks at Maryland, Baltimore-based Framebridge allow you send in your art—they'll take care of shipping both ways—but also understand if you're feeling especially protective of your new piece: The company will also build a custom frame based on any image you upload to their site. Pricing for a 5"x5" square (read: Instagram-friendly) photo is a flat $39, while a 16"x20" piece will run you $99.

Framed & Matted

From flat, rectangular frames to rounded, contoured ones, Framed & Matted offers a selection of simple wooden styles for any sort of artwork. In addition, the company allows burgeoning collectors (like yourself perhaps?) to select from a number of colored mats—if you're split between two hues, the company will send both for free so you can make the right decision.

Simply Framed

No matter what it is, you don't want your precious artwork to suffer from sun damage while it's on display. Hanging your work in a shady corner is one solution, but starting with the right frame is probably a better one. Simply Framed is based in Florida (The Sunshine State!) and makes custom frames with a plexiglass cover that filters about 85% of UV rays, so your art is protected.
