Wander through the autumn foliage in Rock Creek Park, an urban park of 1,754 acres that includes a network of walking and cycling trails, picnic areas, a golf course, tennis courts, and even an art gallery. 3 Tokyo, Japan

If gazing at gorgeous fall colors is your main goal this season, the city of Tokyo is a must. While it may be known as a light-filled urban jungle, the city has plenty of notable gardens and parks that offer respite from the concrete. Go later in the season, since the hues are most vibrant in late November to early December. The best places for foliage in the city include Rikugien Garden, Koishikawa Korakuen, and Mount Takao.

4 Dallas, TX

Autumn in Dallas offers plenty of traditional activities ranging from pumpkin patches to haunted houses, with gorgeous autumn colors to match. From September 30 to October 23, the city becomes all the more lively with the State Fair of Texas, complete with indulgent food (including fried Jell-O and cookie fries), auto events, and livestock shows.

5 Orlando, FL

This central Florida city is home to some of the biggest attractions in the United States, and as such, has a wealth of experiences to offer in the fall. Attend Fashion Week at The Mall at Millennia in September, or, until November, head over to Walt Disney World for the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, complete with culinary demonstrations and beverage seminars.

6 Cali, Colombia

A cheerful city with a flair for salsa, Cali is a city (nicknamed "Branch of Heaven") nestled in a valley surrounded by hills in western Colombia. Fall is an ideal time to be immersed in the city's culture. In September and October, attend the World Salsa Festival, which welcomes 5,000 dancers from across the world. Or, if your interest is fashion, check out the Cali Exposhow in October.

7 Vancouver, Canada

Vancouver is a bustling city cushioned by nature—and with that come plenty of trees that transition with the season. Sip apple cider at one of the city's many restaurants as you observe the colors of the season, or get even closer to nature by hiking the Grouse Grind, a 1.8 mile trail that leads 2,800 feet to the top of Grouse Mountain.

Beyond seasonal events like the city's annual Fright Nights at the Pacific National Exhibition amusement park, fall is the season when alternative theater arises in the city with the Vancouver Fringe Festival. Alternatively, check out the annual Vancouver International Film Festival, which typically starts in the last week of September.

8 Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

If you want relaxation to be a major part of your fall getaway, Punta Cana is the place to consider. Visit one of the many resorts that offer all-inclusive packages, or golf at one of the 11 courses on the city's strip.

Although the weather in Punta Cana is typically warm year-round (think 80 degrees Fahrenheit), the fall is a likelier season for visitors to experience rain. But don't worry: If it happens to be too wet to hit the beach at any point during your trip, you can hit the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, which has shops, spas, and a music lab, or hit the ChocoMuseo (aka chocolate museum) if you have a sweet tooth.

9 New York City, NY

Every season in New York City has a distinct character of its own, but fall offers the unique experience of strolling through Central Park as the leaves change colors or attending one of the city's many fall food and drinks festivals, such as the New York City Craft Beer Festival. 10 Grenada

Not to be confused with Granada, Spain, this island in the Caribbean experiences more rain in the fall than other seasons, but this also means you can find the best hotel rates in addition to to cheaper plane tickets. If the weather is rainy, check out the Grenada National Museum, which is in a structure built in the late 1700s, or get pampered at the Heaven and Earth Spa, which offers tailored treatments in rooms overlooking the bay.
