It's by a Guy Who Made a Movie Called "LOL"
Oh, the things that can happen on a double date.
In some cases, this fact might scare us away, but when it comes to director Joe Swanberg—a smart, sensitive filmmaker—this is simply an indicator that he grew up in the digital age, too. Swanberg has an established track record of creating moving, nuanced portraits of modern relationships, as evidenced beautifully in his 2013 film, Drinking Buddies.
The Big-Time Cast
"Being in love, what is that? Getting what you want? Or is it giving somebody what they want?" Sam Elliot is always there to ask the big questions.
For his new Netflix show, Easy, Swanberg has assembled a powerhouse cast including the likes of Orlando Bloom, Malin Akerman, Emily Ratajkowski, Hannibal Buress, and Dave Franco. Sometimes a cavalcade of stars spells doom for art, but Swanberg's proved he can work with a whole bunch of talent at once with his 2015 film, Digging for Fire.
Great Movies and TV Shows Happen in Chicago
Easy is the latest entry in a long line of top-flight entertainment set in Chicago, including High Fidelity, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and Swanberg's own Drinking Buddies. There's just something about the town that makes for good material.
A Spoonful of Sugar Makes the Medicine Goes Down
Swanberg cites directors like the Coen brothers and Lars Von Trier as influences, so he clearly isn't afraid of dealing with heavyweight material, but he's also savvy enough to create fun, inviting environments that make viewers want to deal with it, too. So even if this show mines serious terrain, you know he's at least going to make sure you have a good time along the way.
