Emma Stone and Steve Carell face off as Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, respectively, in Battle of the Sexes. The first trailer, released today, previews their recreation of the iconic 1973 tennis match between King, ranked at World Number 1, and Riggs, a retired Grand Slam Wimbledon champion, for a $100,000 prize. The challenge became one of the most-watched televised sporting events of all time.
King's momentous win kicked off a greater conversation about equal pay and gender equality in sports; but before defeating Riggs, the tennis champ and feminist activist experienced some harsh sexism, the trailers shows. "Don't get me wrong, I love women—in the bedroom and in the kitchen," Carell's Riggs boasts in front of King in a press conference.
Directed by Little Miss Sunshine's Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, the film also delves into the athletes' battles off the court, such as King's struggle with her sexuality and Riggs' gambling problem. Alan Cumming, Sarah Silverman and Fred Armisen are also in the cast.
Battle of the Sexes arrives in theaters on September 22, 2017. Watch the first trailer below.
