Why These Friends Are Best: OK, so we know that Lifetime has a Beaches reboot, but the original is so, so good that it transcends age, time, and even space. Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey play childhood pals whose bond evolves into a bittersweet, honest, and eye-opening adult friendship. There are diva-level tantrums, awkward romantic politics, and a struggle with cancer—all real experiences that friends face. Aside from all of that, though, this movie is the reason Midler recorded her heart-wrenching rendition of "Wind Beneath My Wings," so prepare to shed some tears.
"Muriel's Wedding" (1994)

Why These Friends Are Best: A very young (and almost unrecognizable) Toni Collette plays Muriel, an awkward, small-town Australian girl whose only aspiration in life is to get married. Things aren't easy for her; she's either lost in a daydream or getting bullied by other girls (the movie's unofficial tagline is "You're terrible, Muriel"). So, you can't help but cheer her on when she finds a friend in Rhonda (Rachel Griffiths). With a slightly off-kilter worldview, the girls march to the beat of their own drum—and their mutual obsession with ABBA makes their friendship all the weirder.
