We all need a hero. These seven movies showed us what living is all about—and you can count on their heroes to deliver plenty of inspiration and attitude the next time you need them.More

The Character: Kat Stratford
The Movie: 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
Why She Is My Kindred Spirit: From the moment I saw Kat walk on screen with Joan Jett's "Bad Reputation" as her soundtrack, I knew she was exactly the type of woman I aspire to be: sure of herself, unconcerned with the opinions of the masses. Also, her iconic table dancing and the sick burns she dealt to Joey Donner in English class only made her more aspirational.
What She Taught Me: You don't have to be universally liked to be loveable. Kat chose to subvert the expectations of others at every turn, even when it caused her own guidance counselor to call her a "heinous bitch." Being disliked by her peers didn't stop her from getting everything she wanted, including admittance to her dream college (and ending up with Heath Ledger).

The Character: Harvey Milk
The Movie: Milk (2008)
Why He Is My Kindred Spirit: Harvey Milk is one of those heroes who I see myself in, but whose greatness I can only ever aspire to match. In fact, we should all aim to be as brave, charismatic, and energetic in the unrelenting fight for full and equal civil rights for all! Milk is based on the true story of Harvey Milk, an activist who became the first openly gay elected official in the United States. Together, we share an ambivert personality and a slightly awkward disposition—in addition to existing on the same inexplicable emotional frequency that all queer people share.
What He Taught Me: Harvey taught us how to put the best of our energy into making our communities stronger and more inclusive. This applies not only to LGBTQ rights, but to living in general as a real-life human person. In the face of hate, get angry—but channel that energy into fighting back with brains and heart.
