Shopping Resolutions You'll Actually Keep

It's time to get excited about your 2017 look.

Don't clear out your entire closet—do this instead.

Tip No. 1: If Your Resolution Is to Clean Out Your Entire Closet…

Find that one thing that doesn't fit quite right, and have it tailored. You could overhaul your entire closet this weekend, but tackling a big project in a short amount of time sometimes leads to rash decisions (like Marie Kondo'ing half your hoodie collection). Instead, break it down into smaller tasks. This week, find that one thing you've been meaning to have tailored—maybe those jeans that gap at the waist, or the vintage dress with the awkwardly long hem—and actually do it. You'll end up with what feels like a brand-new purchase, which is excellent motivation for heading into next week's challenge: excavating the sock drawer.

Tip No. 2: If Your Resolution Is to Swear Off Fast Fashion…

Shop at Zara the way you'd shop at Barneys. If mega-retailers like H&M, Mango, and Topshop are draining your bank account, it may be time to take a step back and think about how you shop for fast fashion. Do you swing by the sale rack and grab a few trendy pieces without trying them on? Or do you look for items that fit properly and work with the rest of your wardrobe? And, once you've made your purchase, do you care for your clothes (that means hand-washing and line-drying delicate pieces, and sewing on the occasional button), or do they go in the trash the minute they start to show some wear? Fast fashion doesn't have to be disposable—a $50 dress can last just as many years as a $500 dress!—as long as you obsess over each purchase as if you were buying, say, an Acne leather jacket.

Tip No. 3: If Your Resolution Is to Find Your Style…

Buy something thing that scares you a little. We have a feeling 2017 is going to be a rollercoaster, which means there's no better time than now to let go of any "Can I really pull this off?" apprehensions. The answer is always yes! If you've wanted a pair of overalls for months, but worry that people may not take you seriously as an adult human, buy them anyway. If you can't explain your attraction to giant, glittery platforms, don't. Let the sparkles speak for you. Use January to take that trend you've always been a little hesitant to try out for a test spin.

Tip No. 4: If Your Resolution Is to Invest in Basics…

Make it your mission to find one holy grail piece this month. You don't have to build a wardrobe in a single shopping spree; concentrate on finding one perfect piece each month. If your goal is to track down your dream '90s Levi's, research vintage shops and thrift stores in your area, and set aside some time to scour eBay. If you've declared 2017 the year you find a bra that's actually comfortable, schedule a fitting with an expert. If you give yourself a little time and space to shop, you'll end up with a closet full of basics you actually love.

Tip No. 5: If Your Resolution Is to Kick Your Online Shopping Habit…

Limit your online shopping to accessories. We know we're not the only ones who are guilty of buying something online, trying it on, giving it a hard pass, and then just...not returning it. Stop the cycle in 2017 by only shopping IRL for items where fit is everything (jeans, jumpsuits, swimwear). The next time you feel the urge to browse the new arrivals section, stick to items you don't need to try on, like bags and jewelry.
