When designer Jill Stuart is your mother, you have a degree in fashion design from Cornell and did a stint at London's Central St. Martin's, and you have refined painting and illustration skills, it would be safe to introduce yourself as a fashion triple threat. You would also introduce yourself as Morgan Lane, the designer behind the namesake sleepwear and lingerie line.
Thoughtfully designed by Lane, made from materials like dotted French tulle (swoon!), and—in the case of some pieces—featuring a collaboration with artist Baron Von Fancy, these are not the kinds of underclothes you'll find at the mall. To Lane, lingerie is the most essential part of a woman's wardrobe, a special secret to be worn close to the body, and that passion and enthusiasm shows in her designs.
Here we chat with Lane about why she loves lingerie, and the pieces every woman should own.
Why lingerie and sleepwear? What's special to you about intimates?
Ever since I was a little girl I've been fascinated with lingerie. I asked my mother for a new fancy bra [instead of] a handbag or pair of shoes for my birthday each year. I love the detail that goes into it, the delicate fabrics and beautiful romantic prints and colors. They are the closest thing you wear on your body, the first item you put on every day that only you and your loved one know you are wearing. There is something extraordinary about that.
What kinds of things inspire your designs?
I love to have a theme to each collection, to tell a story through the lingerie. This season, I was inspired by "the night untamed." It includes my illustrations of baby leopards and exotic florals on silk and consists of leopard lace and zebra-textured viscose. I want each piece to be something the customer truly treasures.
How did the Baron Von Fancy collaboration come about?
Morgan Lane is represented by the brand muse, a doll named Lanie that I illustrate to express the playfulness, enchantment, and seduction of the Morgan Lane girl. After seeing the artwork "To the Moon and Back," by Gordon [Stevenson, the real name of Baron Von Fancy], I thought it would be cute if we did a sequence of embroideries that showed Lanie traveling to the moon and back. We are both from New York City, so we chose to show Lanie sleeping over the NYC skyline on the sleeping mask. The white and black silk combination is supposed to look like paint on paper.
Do you have a favorite piece in the collection?
My favorite piece changes all the time. However, I like to stick to my roots and what I started with. I still wear the Sophie bra with the little Lanie dolls embroidered on the lace the most. I also love the Emojis of the Week panty set that I collaborated on with jewelry designer Alison Lou: I wear them every day.
What are the three essential pieces every woman should own?
Every woman should have a go-to black bra: it's a lacy but casual, comfortable but luxurious bra and can be worn under anything. For me, that's the Jill Bra. In addition, I think everyone should have a pair of silk pajamas: nothing makes you feel more like a queen, even when you're by yourself at home. Lastly, a garter belt, even if you don't actually wear it, is an essential piece of lingerie that keeps you feeling sexy just knowing it is in your drawer waiting for that special night.
